Fruits, veggies, berries, everything is loaded with preservatives and chemicals these days. You can’t always trust on organic produce either. Of course there is variety of produce wash available in market but they are quite expensive.
I read here and many other places that water is good enough to clean 98% of bacteria from your food. Though I am highly habitual of washing everything before consuming, adding something extra gives more calm to my mind.
Most of the homemade produce wash recipes use vinegar, lemon juice, salt, baking soda etc. I keep it simple
Here is the recipe for easy produce wash I have been using for years. The ingredients are available at home, are cheap and take no time to prepare.
Ingredients
- Water – 5 Cup
- Distilled White Vinegar – 1 Cup
Water and Vinegar in 5:1 ratio. is good enough according to my mind. People use much more concentrated soaks (with 1:1 water and vinegar) too, but I believe its kind of overdoing it.
Procedure
- Rinse your produce with tap water to remove any dirt, debris etc
- Soak your produce in this solution for around 30 mins.
- Dry and refrigerate for later use, or use right away.
Tips
- I do not soak raspberries, blackberries or strawberries for 30 mins. Just 10 Mins are enough for last two and a quick dip and out for delicate raspberries seems to serve the purpose well.
- I use this big stainless steel bowl to soak my veggies. People tend to soak the veggies in sink, I personally do not like to do so. (Although I keep my sink pretty clean).
- Some veggies may retain a little taste/ hint of vinegar. I have experienced it only while making carrot juice so far. To avoid it, I rinse the carrots in plain water before juicing.

You and I use the same simple 2 step method! I don’t think water alone is good enough. Thank you for sharing over at Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party! I’ve pinned it on our Bloggers Brags board.
