The season of chilled drinks, fruit juices, wearing shorts, beach trips, flaunting sunglasses, beautiful hats, pretty dresses, relaxing evening walks and Ice-cream is here! Its almost Summer! This is going to be my first summer in California. Given my experience in Florida and Texas I think I will enjoy it. 🙂
Smoothies are always in my list no matter what the season is. Our smoothie addiction started couple of years back, after watching fat sick and nearly dead. Green Smoothies are one of the best ways to intake all the goodness of veggies and fruits, add in some protein powder and BAM! You got a whole meal. I actually do take smoothie as my lunch when I am working from home.
Today I am going to share an iron, vitamin and protein packed smoothie recipe which in addition to being awesome can improve athletic performance, lower blood pressure and increase blood flow.
Beets has been gaining quite a lot of attention recently and being marketed as super food. Back in India, I remember my parents use to tell us the benefits of beets and we were forced to eat at least one slice when it’s in salad. No doubt about innumerable benefits beet has to offer, It got just one problem. Yes, you guessed it right. Like most of the healthy things, it just doesn’t taste good. I try to eat them raw with salad, sprinkled with a little lemon juice, salt and pepper, but while finishing the last few pieces, I always have to remind myself that I am a grown up and shouldn’t be throwing food. 😦
With this smoothie, you won’t have to compromise in taste or quality. Enjoy and colorful treat.
- 4 cups packed spinach (4 cups raw, around 1 cup after boiling)
- 1 beetroot
- 1 Pear
- 1 frozen banana
- Protein Powder (optional)
- Chia seed Powder (optional)
Boil Spinach for around 10 minutes, drain and cool. Clean and cut pear and beetroot Add milk and/or water at bottom of your grinder, add protein or chia powder (if using), then add spinach, pear and beetroot, afterwards add frozen bananas, top it off with ice and let the grinder do the work.
You will be surprised to see that one beetroot, quite small in quantity compared to all other ingredients, will rule the color of your smoothie.
- Add Protein Powder and/or Chia seed powder if you like. Being a vegetarian, I like to add protein in my diet wherever possible.
- Hot spinach with bring the overall temperature of your smoothie up. You can use some extra ice to compensate that, or just run it through cold water to cool off quickly.
- Frozen fruits, especially banana, help in giving that perfect texture to the smoothie.
